Artist Statement

As an artist I look to find the beauty in ordinary things. There is a beauty in the way that branches cross the blue of the autumn sky, or how mottled shadows dance under a tree. The way light touches these objects turns them into works of art, and I strive to capture this feeling in my artwork. When depicting people, I find that the emotional and psychological states that humans undergo are the most interesting to me. I also strive to create a sense of emotion with these figures, as with all of my paintings. To me, a painting should evoke feeling in the viewer, be it remorse, awe, or just a sense of light happiness. As I continue to work and develop my abilities as an artist I hope to make these two ideas of light and emotion a major component of my work.

On a side note, most of my images of people came from creating a portfolio for AP art. I focused upon the theme of the progression of human sorrow and the psychological and emotional effect is has upon individuals. I picked the best of these works to display; however, they are intermixed with the rest of the images in my people gallery.

If you wish to contact me you can send me an e-mail at mejjohnsen@yahoo.com. Please title it with reference to this blog or my portfolio so that I won’t confuse it with spam mail. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about my work.
